Divorce Child Custody DCS IssuesMelanie R. Bean focuses her practice in trial litigation, primarily defending individuals accused of crimes, litigating family law issues of divorce and custody, and handling appellate matters, both civil and criminal.
Melanie also has unique experience defending Dependent and Neglect petitions filed by the Department of Children’s Services as a result of abuse allegations, which often coincide with pending criminal charges. Even more unique is her intricate understanding of the administrative procedures involving "indications" by the Department of Children's Services and successfully defending individuals indicated as perpetrators of abuse by the Department of Children’s Services and appealing such matters through the administrative procedures division and to Chancery Court.
Melanie currently serves as the Legislative Committee Co-Chair and Board Member for the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL). As Legislative Committee Co-Chair, she works closely with the Lobbyist for TACDL monitoring bills proposed in the Tennessee Legislature to develop legislative policy and implement the strategy of TACDL's advocacy team. She has served on the Board since 2010 and as Legislative Committee Chair since 2009. She also currently serves as an Adjunct Professor for Cumberland University teaching Constitutional Law and Criminal Law to students and has served in this capacity since 2006. Melanie was awarded the distinguished Super Lawyers Rising Star Award for 2013 by a panel of fellow attorneys for her work in Family Law.
Melanie received her Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida. At Stetson, she was honoured with the Williams F. Blews Award for her Pro Bono service and was recognized for service to the Community in Pinellas County, Florida, by virtue of her participation in the public defender clinic. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. At Cumberland, Melanie was honoured with the Raymond Cleveland Award for Excellence in Social Science. In 2010, Melanie was awarded the Workhorse Award by the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL) and also recognized as a TACDL “Shining Star” in 2012.
Melanie currently resides in Lebanon with her husband and daughter.
